Nelson Malden has operated a barber shop at the center of Centennial Hill on the corner of Jackson and High Streets, at the base of the Ben Moore Hotel. He also attended and graduated from Alabama State University, and was a member of Dexter Avenue King Memorial Church.
One day in 1953, a young minister, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. walked into Nelson Malden’s barbershop in Montgomery, Alabama. Little did Mr. Malden know that that man would become an icon in American history. Fades and Fellowship is an opportunity for Mr. Malden to share his personal reflections and memories of his friend, Martin Luther King, Jr. He will also share his memories helping to organize and distribute the Southern Courier newspaper, participating in the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and witnessing the Student Protest movement, Freedom Rides, and the Selma to Montgomery March.
